Birmingham, England, 21 July 1997

The General Meeting of ISUF, held in Birmingham on 21 July 1997, was chaired by the Secretary-General, Anne Vernez Moudon. The principal matters considered and decisions taken were as follows:

1.The Constitution, including a member of changes made by the Council to the draft Constitution, was unanimously approved. A copy is enclosed with this issue of Urban Morphology.

2.Elections to new offices were approved as follows: Anne Vernez Moudon (University of Washington) to be President, and Michaƫl Darin (Ecole d'Architecture de Versailles) to be Secretary-Treasurer. The following members were re-elected to the Council: J. Castex, G. Cataldi, G.L. Maffei, B. Marchand, A. Petruccioli, and J.W.R. Whitehand. The next elections, under the procedures laid down in the newly approved Constitution, would take place in 1999. It was proposed, and approved, that the Council should co-opt a member of the New Researchers' Forum.

3.It was agreed that a Conference would be held biennially. The next Conference, in 1999, would be held in Italy. The next meeting of the Council would be in Paris in July 1998. The need to keep down the cost of attending the Conference was discussed.

4.The names and affiliations of those attending the Conference in Birmingham would be published on ISUF's Web Site. A new ISUF Web Site would also be created.

5.J.W.R. Whitehand would continue as Editor of Urban Morphology in 1998. The April 1998 issue (Volume 2, Number 1) would contain a call for themes and special sessions to structure the Conference to be held in 1999.

6.Several applications for grants to support ISUF's activities have been and will be made. One to the Socrates Program, co-ordinated by Ivor Samuels (Oxford Brookes University), will involve primarily the European institutions associated with ISUF. Another, co-ordinated by Attilio Petruccioli (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), to the FIPSE Program, would involve both North American and European institutions.
